Diamanda Galas (USA)

Diamanda Galas describes Defixiones as an operatic mass dedicated to the forgotten victims of the Armenian, Assyrian, Pontic and Anatolian Greek massacres that occurred between 1914 and 1923 - the so-called minor holocaust of Asia Minor.

It's a show fusing textual, linguistic and sonic modes - a combination that has made Diamanda famous. It is also steeped in the musical traditions from Asia Minor, and draws on Diamanda's own writing and also that of the Armenian poet Siamanto, the Lebanese poet Adonis, and Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis, among others.
